Elections

STEP worldwide Chair

We are delighted to announce that Kelly Greig TEP, Partner and Head of Estate Planning and Tax at Steele Raymond, has been elected as worldwide Chair of STEP, effective 1 January 2024. Kelly succeeds Tony Pitcher TEP, whose term as Chair ended on 31 December 2023.

On being elected, Kelly said: ‘My focus during the coming months as Chair will be on three main priorities. First, facilitating STEP’s necessary evolution by ensuring that we adapt to the changing needs and expectations of our clients, regulators and other stakeholders.

‘Second, to make STEP a truly global organisation by expanding our reach and influence in regions where we already exist and making the most of new opportunities for growth.

‘Finally, focusing on the next generation by attracting, developing and retaining new members. I am excited and eager to have the opportunity to work with fellow global members to help make STEP stronger, better and more successful.’

Kelly will be supported by two newly elected Deputy Chairs: Rod Luker TEP and Paolo Panico TEP. Congratulations to those elected!

The Review demonstrates just how much progress STEP has made in the past year and showcases all of our achievements. We would be nothing without the members who volunteer their time to make this work possible. Thank you to committee members and fellow STEP members for everything you do. Please do share the Review within your networks.

The STEP Journal is going digital

In May 2024, we will launch a new STEP Journal website, which will replace the print publication.

The digital Journal will feature the same interesting articles on a range of topics, fantastic contributors and high-quality design – but with all the added functionality gained from a digital platform: personalisation, interactivity, search and various other additions. We believe that this shift to a digital-only Journal will create a more dynamic and engaging experience for all our members.

Our latest policy consultations

STEP responded to a supplementary consultation on will reform by the Law Commission of England and Wales on 7 December 2023. This consultation addresses two issues: electronic wills and the rule that an existing will is revoked by marriage or entering a civil partnership.

On 8 December 2023, STEP’s Public Policy Committee responded to the Financial Action Task Force’s consultation on draft amendments to Recommendation 25, which details a risk-based approach to beneficial ownership and transparency of legal arrangements.

The UK government has launched an inquiry into the probate registry in England and Wales to examine the causes of delays and other issues and find ways to improve the service. STEP surveyed members in England and Wales asking for examples of the impact caused by delays at the Probate Service. 100 per cent of respondents identified having observed cases of cancelled house sales, while 64 per cent of respondents also observed cases of financial hardship for beneficiaries.
