Work for STEP

Why work for STEP?

STEP is a brilliant organisation and an exciting place to work because of what we do and how we do it. We are constantly evolving to represent the diverse needs of our membership and the families they serve, and to ensure our ongoing relevance and impact.

We pride ourselves on being a friendly and flexible place to work. We're a relatively small team, with around 50 employees in our London Head Office. This enables us to be open, honest and personal with each other and with our members. Everyone who works for us plays a significant role.

Our staff work closely with committees of members to deliver STEP's strategy. Vacancies on these committees are advertised here.

  • Best Companies recognised STEP as one of the UK’s ‘Best Companies to Work For’ in 2022, rating STEP as a ‘one to watch’ company based on the results of our latest staff survey.

Our Commitment to Equality, Diversity and Inclusion

We want all our people to grow and thrive through their relationship with STEP. To make that happen we will treat people fairly and equitably. We will ensure equality of opportunity for all our people. We welcome a range of backgrounds and identities to help us drive forward EDI improvements. Above all, we will create an environment where all our people, regardless of background or personal circumstance, feel valued and included. Our guiding principles set out a framework for everyone acting for and on behalf of STEP.

Our benefits

We greatly value the contribution our people make to our organisation and believe it is important to offer a competitive total rewards package. This includes pay and other benefits that help our people and their family members – now and in the future.

  • Flexible working: We are committed to providing the highest standards of service through a well-motivated, skilled and flexible workforce. The provision of flexible working provides a better work-life balance for our employees.

  • Annual leave: We offer a generous holiday allowance and encourage our employees to switch off and unplug. You'll be entitled to 25 days' annual leave, in addition to statutory public holidays, increasing after five years' service by an extra day per full year of service, up to 30 days a year.

  • Volunteering day: We offer employees one paid day of leave per year to take part in charitable activities.

  • Pension: We offer a generous pension to help you save for your retirement. You’ll automatically be enrolled into our pension scheme if you are eligible. STEP will match contributions of up to 6 per cent of your basic annual salary during the first five years’ service, rising to 7.5 per cent.

  • Life assurance: We have a life assurance scheme in place, giving a death-in-service benefit of four times your basic salary to your nominated beneficiary or your estate.

  • Income protection: We provide income protection insurance that would provide you with a regular income if you were unable to work due to long-term injury or illness

  • Private medical insurance: We provide employees with a comprehensive private medical care package.

  • Wellbeing: We have an extensive package of wellbeing benefits, including eye care, access to helplines and apps to support employees’ physical and mental health, as well as resources to support the financial wellbeing of our employees.

  • Professional development: We champion continuous learning at STEP as one of our four core values and actively support our employees’ personal learning and development. We provide study and training opportunities and sponsorship, including study/exam days and support and fund membership of relevant professional bodies, where this is required either as part of a professional qualification or where there is a clear work-related benefit.

  • Season ticket loans: To help employees manage the costs of commuting to work, we offer a season ticket loan. The loan provides the ability to benefit from the savings of an annual travel pass, without the need to pay the entire amount up front.
