60-second interview with Michelle Wolfe

As part of celebrating the winners of last year's STEP Private Client Awards we spoke to Michelle Wolfe from Meritus Trust Company Limited, winner of Trust Company of the Year (midsize firm) 2023.

What is your role within your firm?

As the Chair, Family Counsel, and Founding Partner of Meritus Trust Company Limited, my role is multifaceted and encompasses leadership, strategic vision, and client engagement. My role within Meritus involves leadership at the strategic level, providing specialized counsel to client families, and contributing to the overall success and growth of the organization as a Founding Partner. This role allows me to engage deeply with both the internal operations of the firm and the unique needs of the client families we serve.

How did it feel to win a STEP Private Client Award (PCA)?

Winning a STEP PCA as a company was an incredibly significant achievement that filled us with a deep sense of gratitude. The STEP awards hold a distinguished status within our industry, making the recognition even more meaningful. Being acknowledged by STEP reinforced our company's commitment to excellence and showcased our collective efforts in the private client sector.

Why is winning a STEP PCA important to your firm?

Winning a STEP PCA is of paramount importance to our firm. It represents a significant achievement that aligns with the high standards and aspirations we set for ourselves. The award serves as a validation of the excellence embedded in our strategic approach, the proficiency of our team, and the efficiency of our processes. It becomes a tangible acknowledgment of the hard work, dedication, and commitment that our team consistently puts into delivering exceptional service in the private client sector.

What are the main challenges facing your organisation/ practitioners at the moment, and how will you deal with them?

The main challenges facing our organization and practitioners at the moment revolve around the regulatory environment and the integration of AI and technology. Our approach to these challenges involves acombination of proactive regulatory compliance measures and strategic integration of AI and technology. Bystaying informed, engaged, and innovative, we aim to navigate the regulatory landscape effectively and leverage technological advancements to enhance the capabilities of our practitioners and the overall efficiency of our organisation.

What do you like best about your job?

What I like best about my job is the privilege of working with incredible families and top private client advisors in the world. The opportunity to engage with and assist these families in navigating their unique financial and personal situations is both rewarding and intellectually stimulating. Collaborating with top private client advisors provides a wealth of knowledge and expertise, fostering a dynamic environment where I can continuously learn and grow in my role.

...and what do you feel is most worthwhile?

The most worthwhile aspect of my job lies in the meaningful connections formed with families, assisting them in shaping and achieving their financial legacy goals. Additionally, the opportunity to work with the next generation and collaborate with dedicated colleagues further enhances the significance and impact of the work we do.

What would you say to a young person thinking of a career in this industry? 

Considering a career in this industry is an incredibly rewarding and impactful path. Working with families and being part of a team of experts provides a unique opportunity to make a meaningful difference in people's lives.

Where do you see future growth, both in terms of sectors and jurisdictions?

In terms of future growth, it's anticipated that the super high net worth families with family offices will be a significant sector of expansion. Family offices, which provide comprehensive and customized wealth management solutions, are positioned to experience substantial growth as they cater to the intricate financial requirements of super high net worth families. In regards to jurisdictions, Asia, North America and Europe are expected to continue being focal points for growth.
